I am running the Yiddish past you. A group could do this. For elderly people could be a great and meaningful project to work on,

I am not interested in students doing it as a class project to drag on for years. Seen that happen with videos, one example is the Police Riot. Not mine, but Paul Garrins got lost in that university swamp.

When I did the Captured film and video book, I was blessed by a couple of Ph.D types who could make something happen. They got a group together. I had collected material, they wrote and collected, edited the articles and put it into the book form. WAs done quickly because I had someone to pay and had to make it happen. The right people can do a lot.

The Hebrew should be possible to find readers in Israel. Or America? Any ideas? Hoping Rabbi Wolfson can help. He was a driving force at NYU. Soon he will be in Israel. I expect the same from him after the move. Eddie is in Israel. David is from Israel.

This is a top shelf crew.. I have worked with Eddy on a number of situations. He is in the JEWs People's History.. And the N Y Tattoo History The Rabbi is reading the 3 volumes and a supporter. David is an amazing person, along with his wife. He drove a cab, a lemo, his wife designed clothes.. they struggled, survived and did well. All 3 of these people have a wife and kids, and have been together for years. They all are surrounded by angels

I want to leave a memory behind of my connection to the LES Jewish community. Especially to honor those I made a deep connection with. More than just the crazy talk from the Grand Street mob. And to balance out all the wild boys I also documented and hung out with. Certainly not trying to give the impression I am some amazing religious person. I have cuts and deep scrapes, but I also have traveled with truly amazing people.

Let's make this happen.

I am trying to help David out with his Children's magical Garden situation. I have introduced him to head people at Henry Street, Girls Club, Coss Marta his brother is our City Councilperson. and others in the community. SO far no action. Tonight I hooked him up with another player. A player who grew up close by. A successful businessman's history. A Dominican. I feel this could be the touch. Let us see.—thanks clayton

I had mentioned this to Eddy and he found detail interesting. Bob Roberts was an orphan., from Auschwitz. I have never heard of an Holocasut camp orphan. Roberts was a very influential American tattoo artist. Tattoo wood blocks are from a tattoo studio in Jerusalem.—thx clayton

Maybe I will reach out to Caraidl. Although I do not have the band width to create more new projects. She studied Yiddish theater at Harvard. Mattired to Aaron Beall. Aaron ran a number of theaters on the LES, started the NYC Fringe Festival, made 42 street Show World a legitimate theater performance art space. Could be something in that mix that would awaken the spirit of creativity locked away in these volumes.

The way I envision is is a ‘talk show’ like podcast in which authors present their individual contributions to the anthology. We would need some seed money, but since David offered to support this podcast financially we can probably put this together with a small budget.

I suggest the following next steps — and I’d be happy to take a lead in this.

We should put together a proposal for a first season. Ten episodes with ten guests (we should include a brief resume, explaining why they are the experts on their topics) and a rough outline of the topics covered.

It’s important that we show a variety of topics, things people would not associate with the Jewish Lower East Side — “not your grandparents’ LES” — like CBGBs, boxing, tattoo artists etc. This does not have to be exclusively out of the box, but I think it’s a ‘selling point.’ And we can also have several contributors in the same episode if they cover similar stories in their pieces, e.g. food or synagogue architecture.

I have contacts at Tablet Magazine, the Forward, and the New York Jewish Week. I can pitch to them the 10 episode first season and see if they’d be interested. Eddy, maybe even YIVO could be a partner for this. Connecting the podcast to a publication or institution would allow for wider visibility and hopefully additional funding.

The guests would receive a pre-set list of questions so that they are prepared, Clayton and I would emcee the conversation, excerpts of the essays could be read on the podcast — cross promoting the anthology, which could be available via the podcast’s homepage (or just linked to Clayton’s Etsy store).

The WeWork on West 25th Street has a recording studio that we could rent, or we can also rent the Dumbo studio we are using for our Audible series (I can find out the rates for both). Alternatively we could record at Clayton’s home, but would then need professional equipment to be brought to Clayton’s.

I also recommend having a videographer to film the interviews so that we can create social media clips with excerpts, maybe historical photographs etc. promoting the podcast. These are just some ideas.—Julian

Since we plan to do in-person events with audience participation, let's identify 4 guests/topics that would be great for an event series and let's try to schedule 4 episodes as a kind of test run. I think it's good to have a rhythm, so maybe every 2 weeks or once a month. With this 'proof of concept', we can then approach partners like the New York Jewish Week and see if we can partner up for a full season one with 10 episodes.

Like this we can test social media promotion, audience interest, technical issues etc. If things are not so smooth in the first round, people are more forgiving and it's less pressure to get it right from the get go.

Clayton, who do you think would be great for the test run? Eddie, I assume you would be available as a guest, right?

I would try to get the NYU Jewish community and local synagogues and Jewish orgs on board if you're all interested or at least promote it.

Vicki is trying to live by the environmentalist and pacifist ideals she’s held since she was younger. She hasn’t strayed far from her childhood upbringing — raised in Flatbush by communist Jewish parents, attending progressive summer camps, and tagging along at her mother’s union events as a child. She went to her first demonstration at 14, a Washington, D.C., rally for racially integrated schools, and at 25 was arrested in Moscow’s Pushkin Square for handing out leaflets against the Soviet Union’s invasion of Czechoslovakia.

David is not in the book.

We are getting to the end of the character period.  NY, certainly the LES was made up of characters.  Just like the cowboy had a 100 year long run in America.  Those who were baby boomers  grew up watching on TV the Lone Ranger, Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, Zoro, Lone Ranger and Tonto, John Wayne, Clint Eastwood and all the Western movies, and so on, is now over, we are coming to the end of the character.

Gentrification and the take over of the tech world has us moving towards a form of fascism, conformity, the loss of the individual.  I would argue those are critical  pieces that made America great.   We are losing the uniqueness of the original thinker.

Anyway -  David was one such character. His interest is drug history.  He has a lot to say.  Another secret is he is Able Zug of Orgies of the Hemp Eaters.

At one point I mentioned a Canadian - David corrected me. I met with Julian Voloj the other day about the podcast. So that is still a go. Have not dropped the LES Jews A People's history effort -  Just takes time.

And I am including this brief note - below - ... is an unusual situation - I have introduced Harry Nudal to some LES gangsters he has connected with. Long prison records like 24 years and 39 years - 32 years in the box - heavy violent history.

They like Harry the poet and a connection has been made. He mentions the middle-class because of the importance of fashion to their image. Harry has a PhD and studied under the poet  Robert Creely.  I have arranged for Medi Matin to do a handmade book filled with a few of Harry's poems. Publisher The Uranian Press.  This will connect Harry to the Uranian Phalanstery history.  Working on another LES legacy project.  Tyler BTW will have a section in the NY Tattoo history anthology which, hopefully will be in NYC before Dec 24th.

Harry's note -

Rabbi to the Cripps...

Thru a rather complicated series of events but mostly thru Clayton Patterson, i;ve talked myself or been thrust into a new unpaid job (as if poetry wasn't enuf) I've become by popular consent Rabbi to the Gangs. I play the part Pat O'brien's priest, plays in prison movies. Remarkably not only do these gang guys know my role after all they all watched the movie but i;m as comfortable with them as they are with me. Who woulda guessed, Gang life is remarkably middle class, if you throw out a few murders in between & I offer as an older man both some solace, a voice outside the ghetto and an ear and heart sometimes to their troubles. I have no intention of converting them to Judaism, Zionism will do fine. It;s an our gang comedy, with a shiv to keep it honest.

Uranian Phalanstery  Richard and Dorothea Tyler, two artists who met while attending the Chicago Institute of Fine Art c. 1956, established the Uranian Phalanstery in 1974. The organization was a work in progress, beginning in the late 1950s, when the couple first moved into two adjacent buildings in the Lower East Side. These buildings housed the organization for over thirty years. Due to physical deterioration of the original buildings, the Uranian Phalanstery moved to the Upper West Side in 2010. The organization is now run by Dorothea Tyler's protege, director and artist, Medi Matin.

The Uranian Press was started by Richard in the late 1950s and served as a means for the Phalanstery to spread their message to a wider audience. Key publications of the Uranian Press include:

The Schizophrenic Bomb (1961), which details Richard's anitnuclear position on war and conflict.

Peranoids Primer (1961)

Mischances of Morely Perus in the Universal Mind (1960)

Creativity as a Mantic Procedure of the Intuitive Function (1959) which examined the unconsciousness.

The Biography of a Flower

Tyler and Dorthea and the Uranian Phalanstery have a place in the Elsa Resaa and Clayton Patterson archive.  If one knows how to look there is a whole connection  to LES Jewish history - yes very obscure - but a strong one for sure. As the winds of time blow the chaff away from the wheat the worthy will appear. The chaff is the noise and the wheat is the substance -  the substance that keeps culture alive.  If we do not save our own history then who will?

Who else knows and can make the connection to all this stuff?---thanks clayton.
